Una New was born in Gulgong, NSW, Australia about 1893. [1] She is the 3rd daughter and fifth child born to Charles Thomas New and Isabella Dougherty.
1915 Marriage
First Marriage
Una New married Lindsay Gordon Stephens a Grazier from Newikie Downs, Mitchell, Qld, on the 21st of June 1915. She was married at the residence of James and Edith Cluff "Rosedale Stn" Mitchell, Qld. Edith was her sister. Witnesses to the marriage were William Kellock and Eileen Cluff (her niece). Alfred Dyer was the officiating minister from the Methodist Church. At the time of her marriage, her occupation was recorded as Domestic Duties on "Avoca Stn", Mitchell, Qld which was a property next door to her sister's place.[2]
1916
Una's first husband enlisted to serve in the Australian Imperial Force on the 28th of March 1916 at Toowoomba, Qld. He embarked from Brisbane, Qld on the 7th of September 1916 arriving at Plymouth, England 16th of November 1916.
Children
Una and Lindsay Gordon Stephens had one child together, a daughter Isabel Mary Stephens born on the 27th of September, 1916. Lindsay Gordon Stephens had already embarked for England to join the fighting in World War One and missed the birth of his first and only child. [3]
1917
On the 4th of February 1917, Una's husband proceeded overseas to France and marched out to his unit from Etaples, France. He was taken on strength 7th February 1917, 42nd Battalion in the field. On the 23rd of February 1917, Private Lindsay Gordon Stephens was killed in action. [4] He is buried at Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France. Plot 3 Row F35. [5]
1919 - Una is listed on the electoral roll residing at Newikel Downs, Mitchell, QLD. Occupation - Home Duties. This property was located south of Mitchell, QLD. (Variations of spelling of property name - Newickie/Newikie). [6]
1927
Second Marriage
Una (New) Stephens married Arthur Backhouse, Storekeeper from Mulgeldie, Qld at St Matthew's Church Gayndah, Qld on the 21st of September 1927. The officiating minister was Robert Alexander Burnett, a priest of the Church of England. Witnesses to the marriage were Daisy M.M. Burnett and Una Cluff (her niece).[7] [8]
Death
Una passed away on the 26th of November 1973 in the District Hospital at Monto, Qld at the age of 80 years. The informants on the certificate were her husband Arthur Backhouse and V.F. Naumann (No Relation) District Hospital, Monto. [9]
Burial
Una is buried in the Presbyterian section of the Monto Cemetery, Monto, Qld. [10] [11]
