Message on MyFamily.com for Newberry family. Posted by Joan Alyea Dec 29, 2002. "John Newberry married twice -- first to Charlotte Griffin, with whom he had two children, Sarah Ellen and Dudley. Charlotte died September 1860. John enlisted in the Civil War (Company H, 4th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry, from Sept 26, 1861 to Nov. 3, 1864. On May 29, 1864 he married Nancy Elizabeth Salisbury Hovey in Natchez, Mississippi. Emma and Henry Davidson were their 'adopted' children. Emma was born June 1878 and Henry was born February 1885. Nancy was first married to Jaspar Hovey, who died during the Civil War. It was very common to adopt children of relatives or neighbors when one or both parents died. John Newberry lived in Mason County, Illinois before the Civil War as well as in Red Willow county, Nebraska." Joan Alyea has the military and pension records for John Newberry, from the National Archives.
