Biography

Martha Patty Newberry was born on August 20, 1832 in Brownhelm Township, Lorain County, Ohio, United States, the daughter of James Abram Newberry and Mary Smith.[1]

In 1852 she immigrated from Ohio to the Utah Territory with the Robert Wimmer Company.[2]

She married John Smith Hyatt in about 1854. They settled in Parowan, Iron County, Utah, where they had ten children.

  1. John Joseph Hyatt was born on November 3, 1853.
  2. Matilda Smith Hyatt was born on December 11, 1855.
  3. Inez Adeline Hyatt was born on August 20, 1858.
  4. Herbert Smith Hyatt was born on August 23, 1859.
  5. Melissa Myra Hyatt was born on March 6, 1862.
  6. James Ambrose Hyatt was born on October 23, 1863 .
  7. Sally Ann Hyatt was born on November 23, 1865.
  8. Hellen Aurelia Hyatt was born on December 1, 1867.
  9. Clarissa Elizabeth Hyatt was born on February 26, 1870.
  10. Minnie Eugenia Hyatt was born on August 25, 1872.

Martha Patty's husband practiced polygamy and married a second wife named Martha Jane Turner, who lived in Parowan with them until this second wife divorced him sometime before 1870.

Martha Patty passed away at an age of eighty-five on September 23, 1917 in Parowan. She is buried in the Parowan City Cemetery.[3][4]
