Biography

Millicent Newby was born Nov 1, 1814 in Perquimans County, North Carolina. Her parents, Thomas Newby and Mary Bogue were Quakers; so Millicent was raised in the Quaker Church. By 1927 Thomas and Mary were living in Washington County, Indiana. Millicent, aged 12, was with them. Millicent married Willis Newby in 1832 in Jackson County, Indiana. They were actually distant cousins, but any relationship was denied. Quakers had to marry in the faith or face being removed from their church.

Millicent and her parents were called to Wayne County, Indiana from their home in Jackson County, Indiana to help with a new church. Millicent was also called to be a preacher. Millicent stayed there for over a year and then returned to her husband and family at the Driftwood Meeting in Jackson, County, Indiana.

Millicent and Willis were the parents of eight sons and three daughters. Two of their sons fought in the Civil War. Quakers were pacifists; so this was frowned upon by the church. Many men were disowned for fighting. By 1870 Millicent and Willis were living in Hardin County, Iowa. They remained strong Quakers their entire lives.

Millicent died Aug 26, 1896 in Hardin County, Iowa. She is buried in the Quaker cemetery in New Providence beside her husband, Willis.
