Gabriel Newby was born in Adamstown, County Wexford, Ireland on 11 July 1666.[1] His birth to William Newby "of Nansemond" is also confirmed by his marriage document. He first appears in the records of Chuckatuck Monthly Meeting in Virginia as a witness to a 1687 marriage[2] and his sister Dorothy's first marriage in 1688.[3]
He married Mary Tomes (Toms), daughter of Francis Toms, on 1 Aug 1689 at the house of Ann Nicholson in Perquimans, Albemarle County, North Carolina.[4][5] The marriage document is interesting as it refers to Perquimans being in Albemarle County; at this time all the area north of Albemarle Sound was in Albemarle County.
He passed away 7 Mar 1736 in Perquimans, North Carolina.[6][7]
Gabriel's Will[8] was written 26 Mar 1733 and proved 1 Mar 1735. The abstract[9] reads as follows:
Sons: Joseph (plantation of 300 acres), Jesse (300 acres of land), Samuel ("my maner plantation" and also two negroes), Francis. Grandson: William Newby (300 acres of land). Other legatees: Richard and Mary Moore. Wife and Executrix: Mary. Witnesses: William Hill, Thomas Muse, Thomas Nicholson. Proven before W. Smith, C. J.

Hinshaw quoted the Quaker record as "d. 12-25-1735 on fourth day of week", which yields 7 Mar 1736, after changing “12” month to February in the following year (25 Feb 1736 was 4th day of the week) and adding 11 days for leap year correction since 1582.

T Stanton's comment that the Quaker records mentioning Gabriel, a 6th great-grandfather of mine, seem to come from Ancestry is correct. Unfortunately, the GEDCOM import from his page in my Prichard-Love tree at Ancestry did not provide direct links to specific Ancestry.com databases. As time allows, I will try to update Gabriel's WikiTree profile with specific links to the Quaker records at Ancestry. Tonight, I have clarified the sources for Gabriel's death date and the birth dates of his children listed in the Biography section of his profile. Stay tuned . . .
In cleaning up this profile after multiple merges, it was not possible to untangle all of the citations, particularly for the Quaker MM records which mention Gabriel. Those all seem to come from Ancestry but there's no link to the actual citation. Perhaps one of the PMs could re-source and re-cite those.
