Biography

Potsdam Herald Recorder - Friday Feb 18, 1916

Mary Ann Rodee passed away at the old homestead in Lisbon on Thursday Feby 10 after a brief illness of the grippe.

Mrs. Rodee, the daughter of Robert and Ann Newby, was born in Lisbon about one and a half miles from the village of Morley, on the eighteenth day of June, 1832, and was therefore 83 years old last June. Her mother and father emigrated here from Yorkshire, England, and were of that sturdy stock that has done so much for this north country in cutting out the forests and clearing the land.

She went to the country and village schools, and later married John Rodee, moving to Potsdam at the time. Mr. Rodee was engaged for many years here in the milling and feed business until he retired. He died some years ago.

About four years ago Mrs. Rodee went to live with her sister, Mrs. F. N. Swan and lived there until the death of Mrs. Swan in August 1913, when she went to live with her brother, Elisha Newby, who had always dwelt upon the homestead.

Mrs. Rodee was a woman of strong character, kind to a fault, and always ready to do all she could for her fellowmen. She was a devoted member of the Methodist Church in this village and was always found in her place in church and Sunday School, when she was in Potsdam. Since her going to Morley she has visited here several times and always a host of friends were pleased to greet her.

Funeral services were held at the home in Lisbon Saturday morning, Rev. A. C. Dowe of the Wesleyan Methodist Church at Morley officiating, and at 2 pm services were held in the Methodist Church in Potsdam, Rev. W. D. Aubrey officiating. Miss Thomas beautifully rendered two hymns. Interment was in Bayside.

Mrs. Rodee is survived by one brother, Elisha Newby, and several nephews and nieces, William Newby and Mrs. James Morgan of Morley, Robert Newby, Miss Mary Newby and Mrs. Adam Rutherford of Madrid, John Newby of Canton and F. T. Swan of Potsdam.
