Biography

Benjamin Newcombe was born in 1810 in Kensington, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom. He was the son of Robert Newcombe and Ann Perry. He was christened on 8th July 1820 in St Mary Abbots Church, Kensington, Middlesex. [1] in Kensington, Middlesex, England (St Mary Abbots Church).

He obtained work as a whitesmith, a metalworker who does finishing work on iron and steel such as filing, lathing, burnishing or polishing.
Benjamin Newcombe was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales

Benjamin got into trouble with the law when he was caught stealing a box of linen. Tried, and convicted, in London on 30th June 1831, he was sentenced to transportation to New South Wales for seven years (the English gaols were overflowing, so the government policy was to exile the 'minor' criminals and those with skills needed in the colonies; rarely did such convicts ever make it back to England). He was then described as 22 years of age, 5ft 4 3/4in, sallow complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, and having a blue stoned ring on his left middle finger. He embarked aboard the 429-ton Lady Harewood on 13th March 1832 at Portsmouth and arrived, via St Jago, at Sydney Cove on 5th August that year. [2] In 1837, as one of two convicts he was assigned as a sawyer to Thomas Humphries of Brisbane Water. [3] He became 'free-by-servitude' on 30th June 1838.

Benjamin married Martha Wright on 13th October 1847 in St John's Church of England (Anglican Church), Parramatta, New South Wales. Newcombe-376 and Newcombe-464 appear to represent the same person because: My apologies, Benjamin didn't appear when I added him as the father of Margaret Newcombe but Martha appeared when I went to add her as Margaret's mother. I will add a bit of info I have found on Martha and add Margret as a daughter of Benjamin and Martha. Then a quick merge of the two Benjamins and everything should be right.
