Biography

Birth

No record has been found of the birth of James Q. Newell. His death record says that he was born at Alstead, New Hampshire, the son of James Newell, born in Alstead, and Nancy Newell, born in Brighton, Massachusetts, and his age at his death computes to a birth date of 19 Nov 1838.^[1] His father's name in his death record is incorrect; it was Jonas Newell of Alstead who married Nancy (Weld) Newell of Brighton,^[2] and an undated document in Jonas Newell's probate file records a payment made to Enoch Slade, guardian of James Newell.^[3]

Marriage

James Q. Newell, printer, then of Brooklyn, New York, married Maria Louisa Smith of Alstead, New Hampshire, at Alstead on March 11, 1852. Both had been born in Alstead.^[4][5]

Death

James Q. Newell, printer, died from consumption at Marlborough, New Hampshire, on 4 Mar 1860, with his age at his death recorded as 31 years, 3 months, 15 days.^[1] His gravestone at the Woodland Cemetery in Keene, New Hampshire, says that he died on 4 Mar 1860 at the age of 31.^[6]
