Biography

Adam Newitt was born in 1789 at Long Buckby, Northamptonshire, England. He was christened on 13 August 1794 at Long Buckby, Northamptonshire, England.

He was a shoemaker, born 1784, died Shoemaker 6th February, 1874 in Sorell [1]. He was convicted at the Northampton Assizes for stealing leather and sentenced to 14 years[2]

His first wife was Sarah Lee who he married 05 Aug 1791, Long Buckby, Northamptonshire[3] Reseach note: a dubious claim in conflict with his date of birth

He was a widower when he married Ann Russell (born Harris)(1780-11/11/1847) on 11 Aug 1817 in Long Buckby, Northamptonshire. Witnesses included William NEWITT and Harriot BUSWELL[4][5]

Convict Adam Newitt was convicted in 1827and sentenced to 14 years transportation for stealing leather. He came to Tasmania on the ship Asia which left Portsmith 16 Aug 1827 and arrived in Hobart 7th Dec 1827[6]

His wife Ann arrived with 5 children in 1832 and they finally settled at Sorell. They had their sixth child in Australia.

His conduct record states that he received a conditional pardon in 1838.[7]

1841: Free Certificate.

He died on 6 February 1874 at Gordon Highlander Hotel, Sorell, Tasmania, Australia,[8] He was buried circa 10 February 1874 at St George Anglican Cemetery, Sorell, Tasmania, Australia.[9]

Note

He swiped a lady's drink and she pushed him and he fell and hit his head on the foot rail. Apparently he was not a model prisoner and spent some time on the treadmill and other punishments were meted out for being out of bounds and drunk and disorderly during his 14 years imprisonment.

Research Notes

Sarah Lee could NOT be his first wife as Marriage Date of 5 Aug 1791 would mean he was aged 7 or 2 (depending which birthdate is true) & Adam Newitt , husband of Sarah Newitt died on 5 Oct 1798 (If FreeREG database is correct)

More likely that his first wife was Ann Harris FreeREG database [10]
