Biography

Catharina, daughter of Cornelis Nieuwkerk and Lea van Etten, was baptized on 14 August 1757,. Baptism was recorded in the registry of the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, New York. Witnesses were Gysbert van Etten and Elisabeth van Etten. [1] Baptism is said to have been in Katsbaan, New York (source of this informatoin not identified).

Her parents were Cornelis Adriaanse Nieuwkerk & Lea van Etten. She was named after a grandmother, Catharina Cool.

Surname variations include: Nieuwkerk, Newkerck, Newkerk, Newkirch, Newkirk, Noukerk, Nukerk, Newark.

She married on 2 February 1778 in Rhinebeck Flats, Dutchess County, New York to Benjamin Van Etten. They had about 10 children.

In 1781 Catrena Newcerk & Benjamin VanEtte were mentioned as parents at the christening of a daughter. [2]

She passed away in 1824.

Disputed Spouse

The Ulster County Genealogical Society identifies Catherine Newkirk as spouse of a different Benjamin Van Etten. However, a Bible source confirms this entry. Also, Van VanCuren, respected genealogist and author of the VanCuren genealogy, cites Rhinebeck DRC baptism #1640 p76: Benjamin Van Ette/Catrena Newcerk, child Sarah b=11 Apr 1781 bapt=03 Jun 1781 (named for Benjamin's mother) sponsored by Ab'm Van Etee & wife Sarah Steenbergh.
