Mary, aka Mollie, was born in 1867 in Stillwater, Saratoga county, New York. She was the daughter of Henry Newland and Louisa Neilson.
Mary was on the 1880 Stillwater, Saratoga county, New York census with her parents and brother David.[1]
She married Rev. Robert Henry Carson on 01 Dec 1897 in Stillwater, according to an article published in the Schuylerville Standard:[2]
"-Cards are out announcing the marriage of Mary Elizabeth Newland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Newland, to Rev. Robert Carson, Wednesday, December 1, at 12 o'clock noon, in the Second Baptist church, Stillwater."
They had two sons, Robert Henry Carson jr., who died at age 4 in 1906 and Donald Newland Carson.
Mary was the author of the classic poem "My "Patch of Blue"", published as a Christian booklet in 1923.[3] Mary had been bedridden with arthritis for many years, unable even to turn her head to look at the sky. According to an obituary published in the Saratogian newspaper, she had used a mirror in her lap to look at the sky, her "patch of blue."[4]
She passed away in 1926 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York.[5] She was buried in Stillwater Union cemetery in Stillwater, Saratoga, New York.[6]
