Biography

William Henry Newland was born about 1832 in Clinton, Kennebec, Maine.

The 1855 Massachusetts State Census for Lowell, Middlesex, Massachusetts, finds Henry Newlin listed, along with Lucy Newlin, Abby Newlin, and Geo. W. Newlin Abby and George are both under the age of 5. They are listed in the household of Eliza Keniston; she is listed, along with her family. Also listed are two other surnames - Samson and Sconice.

William H. Newlin married Lucy Ann Patch on July 19, 1852, in Lowell, Penobscot, Massachusetts. His father is listed as Joseph M. Newlin; his mother is Abigail Newlin. His occupation is listed as 'teamster'. The groom was 18; the bride was 16. Lucy's mother is listed as Mary E. Patch.

William died of 'Ch. Nephritis' (chronic nephritis) on April 18, 1899, at the age of 67. In the record of his death, his occupation is listed as stone mason. His place of residence is listed as Lowell, and he was born in Maine. In the section for 'Maiden of Mother', the name 'William' is written along the left side. In the section for 'Birthplace' (of parents), it says 'Maine, Ireland'. I interpret this to mean that his father's name was also William, and he was born in Maine, and that his mother was born in Ireland. I believe there are two transcription errors on this record. His middle initial has been transcribed from this record as 'N', but it is not the same as the 'N' in Newland. I believe it is actually an 'H'. Also, the last name has been transcribed with an 'S' at the end; this is not necessarily warranted, as the tiny figure is a fraction of the size of the other letters. It is my opinion that the name should be translated 'William H. Newland'.
