Mary Bryant was born on the 12 March 1853 in Chelsea, on the north bank of the River Thames, London & Middlesex, England[1]. She was the daughter of Walter George Newman and Harriet Marks.
On the 2 August 1856, from the Port of Gravesend, Kent, England, the Newman family set sail aboard the "Startled Fawn" for the Colony of Victoria. They arrived at Port Phillip Bay, City of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on the 31 October 1856. The Manifest read as follows:--NEWMAN, Walter G (26) Policeman; NEWMAN, Harriet (27); NEWMAN, Fanny (6); NEWMAN, Walter F. (5); NEWMAN, Mary B. (4); NEWMAN, William (2)[2].
SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE. PORT OF MELBOURNE. Arrived. October 31.—Ariel, schooner, from Chatham Islands, 6th September: Startled Fawn, ship, from London 2nd August, with fifteen cabin and one hundred and fifty intermediate and steerage passengers[3].
Mary married James Perry on the 25 December 1878 in Prahran, City of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia[4]. Seven (7) children were born to the couple:--
Eliza Caroline (Perry) Garrett, born 1879 in Collingwood, Melbourne, Victoria[5];
Rupert Charles Perry, born 13 December 1880 in Collingwood, Melbourne, Victoria[6];
Edwin Perry, born 1888; died 12 October 1889 in Hawthorn, Melbourne, Victoria[8][9].;
Edwin Gordon Perry, born 1890 in Hawthorn, Melbourne, Victoria[10];
Stanley Gladds Perry, born 1892 in Hawthorn, Melbourne, Victoria[11]; and
Elsie Lavinia Perry, born Ca. June 1895, died 28 July 1895 at 1 month old in Hawthorn, Melbourne, Victoria[12].
From 1903 to 1905, Bootmaker, James lived with wife Mary and their children at 11 Burke Avenue, Hawthorn, City of Melbourne, Auburn Subdivision, Kooyong Division, Victoria, Australia[13]. However, by 1909, the Perry family had moved to 240 Riverdale Road, Auburn, City of Melbourne, Auburn Subdivision, Kooyong Division, Victoria, Australiar[14]. James and Mary then moved to 140 Riverdale Road, Auburn, City of Melbourne, Auburn Subdivision, Kooyong Division, Victoria, Australia and we find them there between 1912 and 1914[15].
Then, between 1915 and 1917, James and Mary lived at 12 Seymour Grove, Camberwell, City of Melbourne, Camberwell Subdivision, Kooyong Division, Victoria, Australia[16]. In 1919, up until his death in 1927, the family lived in the suburb of Camberwell, initially at 26 Judd Street and then by 1926 at 84 Bowen Street, Camberwell, City of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia[17].
After James' death in 1927, Mary lived as a widow, in 1928, with her son Stanley Gladds (Perry) at 215 Burke Road, Canterbury, City of Melbourne, Camberwell North Subdivision, Kooyong Division, Victoria, Australia[18]. However, by 1931, both her and Stanley were living at 46 Canterbury Road, Canterbury, City of Melbourne, Camberwell North Subdivision, Kooyong Division, Victoria, Australia[19]. From 1936 until her death in 1946, Mary lived at 7 Sutherland Avenue, Kew, City of Melbourne, Kew Subdivision, Kooyong Division, Victoria, Australia[20].
On the 25 September 1946, at the age of 93, Mary passed away at her home at 7 Sutherland Avenue, Kew, City of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia[21]. Her burial took place on the 26 September 1946 in the Wesleyan area, Section A, grave 758 of the Boroondara General Cemetery (aka Kew), 430 High Street, Kew, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia[22][23].
