Biography
John Newman was born in 1852 in County Meath, Éire.
John married Eliza Tuite (born in 1862 in County Meath). Their children were:
- Edward Newman (1886–1917)
- Elizabeth Newman (1887–1987)
John died on April 19, 1948 in Queensland, Australia, aged 95. [1].
He was featured in the Brisbane Paper The Truth for shooting at a bailiff. May 29 1931. This was a seige where he kept a bailiff pinned down in a creek all day. The newpsaper article says that although 500 shots were fired, no one was hurt. The bailiff had come to his farm at Coominya Queensland to make an inventory of the farm with a view to a forced sale to collect unpaid taxes. The bailiff was able to escape when night fell. Source Brisbane "Truth" may 29 1931. There is no record of police involvement or a conviction. ((The bailiffs in Ireland were those who forcibly evicted tenant farmers and destroyed their homes in the 1860's and 70's. It is probable that he had knowledge or experience of this and could account for his general dislike of bailiffs.)
