Greenville was born about 1801 in North Carolina. He was a son of Joseph Newman (1778-1854), the son of John Newman and Harriet Peyton, evidenced by an 1856 Wayne County, Virginia deed between the heirs of the deceased Joseph Newman selling their father's land to Jeremiah Lambert and a second 1856 deed being made to another party for land their father had sold during his lifetime.[1] [2] [3]
He married first Sarah Hazlett 18 December 1823 in Cabell County, Virginia. Marriage performed by Stephen Spurlock. (NOTE: the FHL shows the marriage date as 10 Dec 1823 but the actual record when viewed on West Virginia Culture's website shows the date was 18 December 1823.)[4] She was a daughter of Alexander Hazlett and Phebe Cyrus.[5]
In 1826 he was recorded buying 240 acres on Price's Mill Creek in Cabell County from James T. Watson of New York City, the same man his father had bought land from in 1816. Greenville's household was first enumerated in Cabell County during the 1830 census next to his father and extended family. Sarah, his wife, was named in an August 1834 Cabell County deed selling Greenville's 240 acres on Price's Mill Creek. A biographical sketch of her son Henry Newman in Hardesty's "West Virginia counties; v. 06," indicates Sarah died about 1837.[6]
The 1830 census shows Greenville resided in Cabell County, Virginia. The household of Greenville Newman (age 20-29) included his wife Sarah, the female in the age 20-29 category, 2 males under 5 and 1 female under 5. [7]
In 1834 Greenville Newman and his wife Sarah sold 240 acres of land on Trace Fork of Price's Mill Creek to Absalom Ballengee. This property was part of a larger tract of 70,200 acres! Boundary mentioned with Alexander Hazlett. Deed transfer was made by Manoah Bostick and Lewis Summers, Attorneys for James T. Watson and Greenville Newman and his wife Sarah to Absalom Ballengee. [8]
It appears Greenville may have been enumerated alone in 1840 next to his brother Peter who's household was very full.[9] It is not certain but this appears to indicate after Sarah had died their children were cared for elsewhere. Her infant heirs were named in an 1847 Commissioner's Deed which resulted from a Wayne County Chancery suit amongst heirs of her father to include; "Henry Newman, Almarin Newman, Jane Anna Newman, Andervil Newman, and Arrena Newman."[10] Sarah and Greenville were also named on the 1859 marriage record of daughter Frances Newman to Eclatus Johnson and it isn't clear why she wasn't listed in the heirs above, The 1847 Commissioner's Deed named Peter Newman & wife Frances Newman. This was Greenville's brother Peter and his wife Frances (Hazlett) Newman. The original documentation may have included two individual Frances Newman(s) which may have led to a transcription error omitting Greenville's young daughter Frances Newman. [11]There is another chancery court case identifying Sarah's children. The case was Andrew J. Cyrus [husband of Arrena] vs. Henry Newman, et al. This chancery suit by Arrena's husband against her siblings gives calculable birth dates of Anderville, Jincey Ann, & Frances Newman.[12]
Greenville again married in Lawrence County, Kentucky to Mary Ann Kelly in 1842 Mary Ann Kelly was thought to have been a widow in the secondary source "Descendants of John Newman by Mahey." It appears her son William may have been born out of wedlock. The death records of her children Warren and Geneva both indicate she was born a Kelly. [13]
Greenville's 1850 household was thereafter enumerated in Trout's Hill of Wayne County, Virginia to include children by his first and second marriages, excepting those who had already married or were residing elsewhere. His father Joseph was at this time enumerated in the Trout's Hill District household of Thomas Hutcheson who had married Greenville's sister Agnes, both of whom were named in the 1856 sale of Joseph's land along with Greenville's brother Peter Newman and sister Nancy Canterbury and her husband John Canterbury.[14]
The 1860 census shows Greenville residing next to Jeremiah Lambert who had purchased Joseph Newman's Wayne County land, suggesting Greenville may have been leasing a part of it from Lambert. There is no indication he ever owned land in Wayne County. [15]
His household of 1870 and the last enumeration of his household during the 1880 census indicated he was residing in the Butler District of Wayne County, West Virginia. The last record indicated he was then 78 years of age. [16][17]
