Reuben Newman Sr. was born about 1757 in Richmond, Virginia, USA to George Newman & Frances Dye Newman.
Private Reuben Newman served with 6th North Carolina Regiment, Continental Army during the American Revolution.
Reuben served in the Revolutionary War in the 1st North Carolina Continental Line Battalion as a Private. He was in the Continental Army about 2.5 Years. He was first stationed at Wilmington, NC, then Halifax, then, under Washington's Army at Alexandria, Virginia on the Potomac River, and at Germantown, Pennsylvania.
He was present and served in the 1777 - 1778 Winter Encampment at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania under Gen. George Washington, then in June 1778, marched from Philadelphia to New York City after the British Army forces evacuated Philadelphia, with the American Forces catching up to the British Army at Monmouth Court House in New Jersey on June 28, 1778 - the longest sustained battle of the Revolution and the last major engagement of the War in the northeast. It was incorrectly anticipated the next British objective would be in the New York Highlands. They marched across the Hudson (White) River and camped at White Plains, New York under Gen. Frederick Von Stuben.
He was on the muster roll of September 8, 1778 as a member of Capt. Reid's Company, Col. Thomas Clark's Battalion, 1st North Carolina Continental Line. After being stationed at White Plains, for some time, they marched in the direction of Connecticut, where Col. Bailey's Light Horse Company was destroyed in the nighttime by the enemy, so they returned near to the North (Hudson) River. Here, he took sick and was discharged in Paramus, New Jersey on November 10, 1778, where he set-out, on foot, in the direction of his home with his musket and some food stuffs to sustain him, en route.
He later served in the SC Militia Forces in the continuing War of Independence, for the War shifted to the South after he returned home to North Carolina.

Many have connected Reuben Newman's second wife as a Sarah Catherine Drafts Caughman; however, Reuben's second wife (believed to be A Catherine) had children with Reuben between 1790 & 1805 (John through Fauntleroy). If this is true, she couldn't have been married to Mr. Christopher Caughman, concurrently, and had children with him, whose birth dates range from 1787 to 1806, and are referenced for Catherine on Find-A-Grave (Find A Grave: Memorial #11144426). These two sets of children overlap in birth dates. Therefore, the search for our 2nd wife of Reuben's (believed to be A Catherine), continues.
Third Wife: Sabra Walker (1792-1862)
Children:
Louisa (Eliza) Newman (1827-?) – m. David F. Hughston (1818-1898)
