Biography

Haman Newman was christened on 25 Apr 1816 at St Laurence's Church in Lurgashall, Sussex. He was the son of William and Ann Newman. His father's occupation was given as carpenter.

By June 6th 1841, the family were in Chappel, Essex with six of their (presumed) children - Heman (25), Harriet (22), George (15), Eli (13), Harvey (9) and William (6).

Haman married Harriet Bryder in 1842 in Midhurst district.

By March 30th 1851, Haman and Harriet were living in Northchapel Street, North Chapel, Sussex. Haman was working as a journeyman carpenter, and they had four children - Walter (7), George (5), Henry (3) and Henrietta (under a year old), all born in Northchapel. They also had two lodgers.

By April 7th 1861, they were living in Church Road, Godalming. Haman was working as a carpenter. They had seven children in the household - Walter (17), George (16), Harry (13), Henrietta (10), Charles (9), Harriet (6) and Haman junior (3).

Harriet died in 1862, aged 41. Her death was registered in the second quarter of 1862, in Guildford district.

Haman married Mary Warner in 1867 in Lambeth district.

By April 2nd 1871, they were living in Godalming. The only other listed in the household was Haman junior, who was 13 now. Haman senior was still working as a carpenter.

By April 3rd 1881, Haman was working as a carpenter on an estate. They were living at The Gardens in Upper Eashing, Godalming. The children had all left home, but they had a lodger, and two servants.

Haman died in 1889, aged 73. His death was registered in the third quarter of the year, in Guildford district.
