Biography

Joseph was born about 1825 in the Brimstone Creek area of Morgan County, Tennessee, Brimstone Creek became part of Scott County on December 17, 1849. He was the son of Ezekiel Newport and Rebecca ( Cecil ) Newport. Joseph married Lucretia ( Begley ) Newport about1840. He passed away on March 15, 1890 in Scott County, Tennessee.

Military Service : Captain, Company C, East Tennessee National Guard, Regiment 1, Union Army, Civil War.

Civil War Record :

Joseph C. Newport was captain of Company C, EAST TENNESSEE National Guard during the Civil War. he enlisted and was mustered into the service on September 15, 1863, to serve 60 days. He was discharged from service on December 14, 1863. Newport was married to Lucretia Bagley and according to an affidavit filed by her he had previously been married. He died on March 15, 1890, after which his widow applied for a pension based on her husband's Civil War service. She died on May 24, 1905. Newport is buried in the Pemberton Cemetery in the Brimstone section of Scott County and has a military tombstone.
