Biography

Peter was born before 1718, probably in Virginia. [1] He passed away before the August term of the Granville Co NC court. [2]

On 3 Jan 1737, he and his wife Elizabeth sold a tract of land made up of land she inherited from her father James Butler and her uncle Richard Butler. [3]

Land was surveyed for his land patent in Prince William County on 16 Sep 1739, so he was at least 21 years old at the time. [4]

Peter apparently married at least twice. It is unclear when Elizabeth died, however, when Peter drafted his will on 1 Sep 1782 in Granville County, NC, he was married to a woman named Jenny. [5] There is no evidence that Elizabeth and Jenny were the same woman. The names are just often combined on public family trees.

He died prior to the August session of the Granville County court.

Peter Newport of the county of Granville, North Carolina set his hand and seal to his Last Will and Testament on the 1st day of June 1782 making special bequests to:

  • wife Jenny Newport
  • daughter Catherine Head and her son James Head
  • daughter Mary Bragg and her son Peter Bragg
  • daughter Elisabeth Butler, her husband James Butler and Semon [or Sumon] Butler
  • daughter Nancy Siddle
  • daughter Lovina Newport
  • daughter Salley Fletcher
  • two daughters Sarah and Frances
  • daughter Lovina Newport sole Executrix[6]

The will was recorded at August Court 1783.[6]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Peter by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Peter:
