Chalattus was born on July 2,1869 in the Brimstone Creek area of Scott County, Tennessee. He was the son of William Newport and Rachel Miley ( Buttram ) Newport . He married Anna McGrath on November 3, 1893 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. His name has been spelled several different ways, such as, Colatus, Chalattus, Cholattus, or Calattus ."
He was a retired Police Officer for the city of Columbus, Chalattus passed away from a cerebral hemorrhage due to a enlarged heart on September 13, 1945 in Columbus. He was buried at Saint Joseph Cemetery, Lockbourne, Franklin County, Ohio on September 15, 1945.
