Richard Newport, 2nd Earl of Bradford was born on 3 September 1644.[1] He was the son and heir of Francis Newport, 1st Earl of Bradford and Lady Diana Russell, daughter, and co-heir, of Sir Thomas Wilbraham 3rd Bt., of Weston-under-Lizard, Staffs.. He is a notable person and a Wikipedia Profile is maintained.

He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford University, on 28 June 1661, and graduated, Master of Arts (M.A.), from Christ Church, Oxford University, on 12 September 1662.

He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Shropshire between 1670 and 1681.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Shropshire between 1689 and 1698.

He was styled Lord Newport, 11 May 1694 and succeeded his father, as 2nd Earl of Bradford, on 9 Sept. 1708.[2]

He died on 14 June 1723 at age 78 at Soho Square, London, England. He is buried at Wroxeter, Shropshire.

Family and Legacy

He married Mary Wilbraham, daughter of Sir Thomas Wilbraham, 3rd Bt. and Elizabeth Mitton, on 20 April 1681. [3] They had six sons (four died in the lifetime of the Richard) and five daughters.

Recorded children of Richard Newport, 2nd Earl of Bradford and Mary Wilbraham:

  • Anne Newport;, suggested by wikipedia[4] to be the second daughter, married to Sir Orlando Bridgeman, 4th Baronet. She died 19 Aug 1752 and is buried at Weston Park, Staffordshire.
  • Diana Newport; d. 14 Jul 1766. Said to be the third daughter, married to Algernon Coote, 6th Earl of Mountrath.
  • Elizabeth Newport;
  • Henry Newport, represented Bishop’s Castle and Shropshire and later 3rd Earl of Bradford; b. 1683, d. 23 Dec 1734
  • Richard Newport; b. bt 1683 - 1696, d. 3 Dec 1716. Richard was the second son, was a Member of Parliament and predeceased his father.
  • Thomas Newport, later 4th Earl of Bradford; b. c 1696, d. 18 Apr 1762
