Biography

Cornelia (Katie) was born on November 6, 1879 in Summit Township in Iowa^[1]. She passed away on September 16, 1915 in Union Township in Iowa^[1].

Katie's father was born in Holland and records show the use of the last name Van Nieuwpoort (incorrectly transcribed without the u and double o) in the 1880 U.S. Federal census^[2] as well as the Iowa Marriage records in her marriage to John Bittner in 1895.^[3] The marriage record has her name misspelled in the transcription, but the document has the name as "Katie Van Nieuwpoort." That document indicates that the information was provided by Peter Van Nieuwpoort and "Agie" Van Nieuwpoort and is considered by this researcher to be more authoritative.

In Winifred (Winnie) Bittner's 1978 handwritten recollection of her life, she noted that Katie died in an "accident." ^[4] (Winnie married Katie's son, Arthur.) She relayed to her grandson, Jeff Koertzen, years later that the accident occurred when Katie was stepping off of a stagecoach and her heel got caught. This spooked the horses, and they took off, dragging her to her unfortunate death.^[5]

She grew up in Mahaska County, and married James Linza Gorsuch, 25 Dec 1918 in Lacey, Mahaska, Iowa. They had no issue. She moved with her husband some time after 1940 to Salem, Marion, Oregon and listed as living with in 1971 in Salem. She died 3 Feb 1975 in Monroe, Benton, Oregon.
