Betsy was the third daughter of Mark and Ann Newth and baptised on September 29, 1832 in Wiltshire, England.
1841 Census [1] had Ann aged 35, Amelia (15), Mark (14), Eiz. (8), Ellen (6), Eliz, (4), Martha (2) and a number of adults (mainly Excavators) living at Wood Street, Kingsbridge, Wootton Bassett
She arrived in Nelson with her mother and siblings on the ship 'Lloyds' in 1842.
Her father had arrived earlier on the 'Will Watch' with an advance party in November 1841.
In 1852, She married Gardner Hunter at her family home. Betsy and Gardner were to raise a large family of 13 children.
Betsy Jane (nee Newth) passed away age 45 and is buried at St Michaels, Waimea West. She and her family are recorded on a memorial plaque acknowledging the Newth family as founding settlers of Waimea.
