Taxation Agent fined £100 for not Filing Returns - 3 Nov 1948

SYDNEY, Tuesday.

James Donnell Newth, chartered accountant and a registered taxation agent, of Narrandera, who had handled income tax returns for clients for many years, pleaded guilty at the Central Court to-day, to having failed to furnish his own returns for 1945, 1946 and 1947.

He was ordered to pay a penalty of £100.

Mr. George Faithful (for the Taxation Department) said Newth's net income for 1945 was £482 (tax £55), for 1946 £612 (tax £134), and for 1947 £570 (tax £75). Newth had paid no taxation for those years.

Mr. Toose (for Newth) said that while overseas with the A.I.F., Newth left a partner in charge of his taxation business and on return had found the partner had left.

Owing to staff trouble, Newth had been unable to carry on the business properly and, in some cases, summonses were issued against Newth's clients as returns had not been furnished.[7]
