This profile is being worked on by members of the England Project's Managed Profiles Team. There are several pending merges and at least two women currently attached as wives to verify. Fitz-Henry-9 15:30, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.
Robert Newton of Woolsthorpe (Woolstrope), Lincolnshire, England was the eldest son of Richard Newton (abt.1551-1588) of Woolsthorpe (buried 20 April 1588 at Colsterworth) and his wife Isabel [1] He was born probably in the mid 1570s. A possible baptism for him is "Robert, son of Richard" baptised on 26 October 1576 in Ingoldsby, (a parish about 6 miles north east of Colsterworth) Lincolnshire, England. [2][3]
Robert inherited the property of Woolsthorpe purchased by his father, which he settled on his eldest surviving son Isaac: Robert Newton of Woolsthorpe aforesaid inherited the same purchased lands, after the death of his father, as is mentiond in the aforesaid deed, dated 15. Car. I. by which deed he settled the Mannor of Wolsthorp by him purchas'd upon his eldest son Isaac. {Citation Needed}
Marriage
Robert married before 21 August 1596 (baptism of eldest known child, daughter Isabel). A marriage has not been discovered and his wife's name is unknown. (Note: any suggestion that his wife's name was Anne is merely speculative and invariably unsourced or incorrectly sourced. See Research Notes).
Children
Robert and his wife were the parents of four sons and seven daughters. Five of these died in infancy (John, Mary, Margaret, Ales /Alice and Anne.)
Robert was buried on 20 September 1641 at the parish church of Colsterworth, Lincolnshire, England.[4][5].[6][7][8] [1641 Buried] Robert Newton Septemb: 20
Robert is not known to have left a will.
Research Notes
Robert's baptism
Apart from the possible baptism in 1576 in Ingoldsby, there is also a baptism of a Robert Newten in 1575 noted at Long Bennington [9] This about 20 miles north of Colsterworth, midway between Grantham and Newark on Trent.
Robert's Marriage
There is a marriage in Tattershall, Lincolnshire between a Robert Newton and Ann on 6 April 1592. The image of the parish register available on FMP shows that her last name is not recorded in the register. [10] Tattershall is over 30 miles north-east of Colsterworth making it unlikely that this is the correct marriage. There is no indication in the Tattershall register which parish each party was from.
Robert's children
The recently discovered (April 2023) baptisms of four more children all of whom died in infancy, explains the previous existing gap between surviving siblings Elizabeth (1598) and Isaac (1606). These were Mary (1600), Margaret (1602), Ales (1603/4) and John (1605),
The chart in "Noyes (1857)", lists only 2 daughters Mary & Alice.[2]; whereas "Foster" lists 7 daughters: Isabel. Elizabeth, Mary, Margaret, Alice, Mary, Anne [11]
Some online trees claim that he was the father of John the bastard child of Ann Wood baptised at Manchester Cathedral (over 100 miles from Colsterworth) on 13 February 1602/3. This is extremely unlikely. [12][1602] 13 Februarie: John bastard of Robert Newton & Ann Woodd
The following information is based on speculative and unreliable non-primary sources, such as Find a Grave memorials: all such information which follows is regarded as incorrect and should not be re-introduced into the profile.
his mother was Eleanor (Atkenson) Newton 1552 - 1600
Robert was married twice:
spouse#1 Lady Carole (Wood) Newton married 4 June 1592 at Tattershall, Linccolnshire Find A Grave: Memorial #237216275
the children listed by these "wives" are also by and large incorrect and irrelevant as the mothers identified are both incorrect.
Robert's own FindAGrave entry is only included here for completeness but has many errors. It makes him a knight (he wasn't), gives him the middle name Isaac, and lists the two wrong wives. There is also no grave image. [13]

The Find A Grave profiles for Anne Wood (Memorial 237216275) and Thankful Bigge (Memorial 73615701) have been updated using available sources to reflect a more realistic picture of these two ladies. Hopefully this will prevent people using them as sources to connect to Robert Newton-832.
There is a Robert Newtone, son of Richard Newtone, christened 26 October 1576, Ingoldsby, Lincolnshire, England. "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975", database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N6DT-DX5 : 5 February 2023)
Ingoldsby is about 6 miles north-east of Colsterworth. Robert is eldest of 3 children christened in same place. Others are William Newtonne, 18 January 1578 , and Elizabeth Newtone, 22 June 1581.
Newton-1134 and Newton-832 appear to represent the same person because: appear to represent the same person and only one burial found Colsterworth 20 Sep 1641 (via FMP)
Hello Robert - the England Project would like to comanage this profile with you, as there has been much inaccurate material posted on the internet about the ancestors of Sir Isaac Newton. I will send you a trusted list request from the England Project's account. If you have any queries about this please don't hesitate to message me.
Thanks, Jo, England Project Managed Profiles Team coordinator
Newton-15184 and Newton-832 appear to represent the same person because: Same burial (20 Sep 1641 at Colsterworth, Lincolnshire). Similar birth details (no definite sources located for birth). Wife is unsourced and no definitive record for the name of the wife is currently available. From the pedigree submitted by Sir Isaac Newton, son Robert baptised on 27 Sept 1607 at Colsterworth is part of the same family.
Middle names were not used in this period in England. The information from Find a Grave is highly suspect and is not considered a reliable source for English profiles in this time period.
