Biography

James Newton was a Kentuckian.

Veteran of the War of 1812. Son of Ignatius Newton by his second wife Susanna, James was married on Feb. 10, 1810 in Washington Co., Kentucky to Mary Spalding, elder daughter of Bennett Spalding and Eleanor Fenwick. He was mustered into Capt Presley C Smith's Company of Kentucky Mounted Militia on Aug. 24, 1813, and served until Nov. 8, 1813. In their later years, James and his wife Mary lived with the families of their son Joseph Newton and their daughter Eliza Newton Mattingly on Hardins Creek. He passed away on 2 Oct 1873 in Loretto Precinct, Marion County, Kentucky[1] but was buried at St. Rose Catholic Cemetery near Springfield in Washington County, Kentucky.

Page 93 of the census shows James Newton family with 1 white male between 40 and 49, presumed to be James, one white female between 50 and 59, presumed to be Mary, one white male between 19 and 15, one white female between 19 and 15 and one white male between 10 and 14. [5]

1850 - Kentucky, Marion County, District 1, 2 Oct 1850
The 870th family in the census shows James Newton (67) and wife Mary (69) living with the John (29) and Elizabeth (27) Mattingly family. James reports his real estate is valued at $425. Mary reports she was born in Maryland. [6]

1860 - Kentucky, Marion County, District 1, 8 Jun 1860
Page 12 of the census shows James Newton (76) and wife Mary (80) living with them is Elizabeth Newton (38). James reports his personal estate is valued at $300. James reports he was born in Kentucky and Mary reports she was born in Maryland. James is a farmer. [7]

1870 - Kentucky, Marion County, Loretto, 11 Aug 1870
Page 15 of the census shows James Newton (87) living with the Henry (49) and Eliza 46) Nevitt family. He values his real estate at $2,000 and his personal property at $500. He has no occupation. [8]
