Biography
In 1850, the Newton family lived on their farm in Clarendon, Rutland, Vermont. Their real estate was valued at $7000. All members of the household were born in Vermont, except as noted. The household included Alexander Newton, 46, a farmer; his wife, Lucilda, 47; their children, Samuel, 21, a farmer; Rollin, 19, a farmer; Jay, 14, in school; Aretus, 12, in school; and Adelia, 10, in school. Also, Lydia McCooms, 67, born in New Hampshire. [1]
According to E. Leonard, in The Newton Genealogy (de Pere, Wisc., 1915) ROLLIN COROLUS NEWTON^ (Alexander', Jasoll^ Jason^ Gershom*, SamueP, John^, RiehardO, son of Alexander and Lucilda (Lindley) Newton of Clarendon, Vt, was born there June 21, 1830, and died at Canaan, Conn., May 5, 1899. He married at Cleveland, Ohio, about 1857, Julia Owen, daughter of Ira and Harriet (Doane) Owen of Montpelier, Vt.. where she was born August 14, 1835. She died at Canaan, Conn., February 13, 1909.Ira Owen was bom at Montpelier, Vt, in 1788. Mr. Newton resided the last years of his life in Canaan, Conn. If we may judge from the birthplaces of his ehildren, he had previously lived in West Rutland, Vt., New York, and perhaps in Cleveland.
