Biography

John Newton was a surgeon and lived at Colyton, Devon, the son of John Newton and Alice Follinger. Apparently, he was born out of wedlock. His baptism was registered under his father's surname; however, he used his mother's maiden name until after the birth of his first son..[1]

His first marriage to Marie Banckes registered under the Follinger surname[2] as is the baptism of their son Anthony.[3] (Please see the attached marriage record, 1609.) After she died he started to use the Newton surname for his next two marriages and the baptisms of his children. Note last baptism of daughter Mary states father as "John Newton or Follinger"

Secondly, he married Florence Parsons. They were married 21 June 1613 at Colyton, Devon.[4] Their daughter, Joane, married Benedict Alvord 26 November 1640. The baptism of this Joan Newton is found in the Colyton Bishops' Transcripts: "Jane Newton of John 20 March 1616/7" thus making her about age 23 at the date of the marriage to Alvord in 1640.

Thirdly, he married Alice Thompson 15 July 1617 at Colyton, Devon. They were the parents of Jane, 1619; Thomas, 1620; Robert, 1621; Walter, 1623; and Mary, 1626.[5]

The will of John Newton of Colyton, Devonshire (executed 3 April 1646, proved 24 April 1647) gives to "Anthony, my said son, and Joane, my said daughter, which are now in New England, six pounds apiece" [6]

His will names his wife, Alice; daughter, Mary; daughter Joane (in the Colonies); and son, Anthony (in the Colonies). His other children are not mentioned in his will, so it it likely they had all predeceased their father.[7]
