Biography

Dana Newton. [1][2][3][4][5]

Dana was born 4 Jun 1782, in Shrewsbury, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, to Moses and Grace Newton.[6] per the vital records, he was NOT born to Jonathan and Sibillah Newton as some genealogies have it. [7][8][9][10]

Dana Newton died 31 October 1835, at age 53, in Shrewsbury, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. [11][12][13][14]

Dana was buried in Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States of America. [15]

Marriages

A Dana Newton, identified in the Shrewsbury records as "Dana 2d", married Meriam Smith of Barre on 24 Aug 1802,[16] after they declared their intentions in Shrewsbury on 7 Aug 1802.[17]

Dana Newton and Meriam Smith reportedly had in Shrewsbury the following children, none of whose births are recorded in Shrewsbury records:[18] The marriages of Courtland and Candace are recorded in the town records, so they were born somewhere.

  • Courtland Newton.
  • Candace Newton.
  • Almira Newton.
  • Alvira Newton.

Either Dana's first wife Meriam died about 1807 (which is not found in the records of Shrewsbury nor Auburn), or the person she married was a different Dana Newton than the one who remained in Shrewsbury, married Hannah cheney, and had several children with her, as recorded in Shrewsbury records. Pending evidence to the contrary, this profile assumes that there was one Dana Newton and that his first wife died about 1807.

Dana Newton then married Hannah Cheney of Ward (now Auburn), in Ward on 7 Feb 1808,[19]

Dana and Hannah Newton had, in Shrewsbury:[20]

  • Charles Harrington, b. 23 Aug 1808
  • Simeon Bruce, b. 24 Oct 1810
  • Moses Dana, b. 29 Apr 1813
  • Asa Cheney, b. 4 Jan 1816
  • Leonard W., b. 10 Feb 1818
  • Grace, b. 1821, died 5 Feb 1828 at age 7
  • Harriet N., b. 12 Jan 1823
  • Mary Ann, b. 24 Aug 1825
  • Martha S.,b. 26 July 1827

Hannah, wife of Dana, died 15 Apr 1833, at age 46. Dana lived 2 more years, dying 31 Oct 1835, age 53.[21]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Dana by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Dana:

As explained in a note just added to the top of the bio, in my view Dana is now connected to the wrong father, and should be disconnected from Jonathan Newton and connected as a son to Moses Newton-3951 and his wife Grace Harrington-4099 Newton. If there are no objections, I'll make that change by Feb 15.
