William W. Newton, Jr. was born 29 November 1917 in McMinnville, Oregon, a son of William Newton Sr (1869-1935) and Amy Elizabeth Doney (1893-1965). His family lived on a farm in Yamhill County, Oregon.[1], [2]
At the time of enlistment in the U.S. military on 16 December 1936, he lived in Newberg, Oregon.[3], [4] In 1940 he was living in Sand Point Election Precinct, King County, Washington and working at the Naval Air Station as a radioman 2nd class.[5] He re-enlisted in the Air Corps on 18 November 1942 in Portland, Oregon.[6]
In 1958 he was reassigned to the war in Vietnam. At that time he was a Chief Aviation Electronics Technician (ATC), Chief Petty Officer (CPO) in the Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG), Naval Advisory Group (NAG), U.S. Navy. In Navy terms, ATC was his occupation code; CPO was his rank.[3] The MAAG was sent to train and assist South Vietnamese armed forces in an effort to stem the rising influence of Communism.[9]
On Wednesday, 17 February 1960, William and two others were on a flight from Saigon to Hue when their plane, a Douglas DC-3 cargo plane, was shot down and crashed into Hòn Cháy Mountain near Da Nang, Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam.[3], [10], [11], [12], [13], [14], [15] At the time of his death in February 1960, William was one of only a few hundred U.S. men in Vietnam. That same year, the number of official US military advisers in the country was increased from 327 to 685 at the request of the South Vietnamese government.[16]
William was the first Oregonian to die in Vietnam. His body was recovered and returned to his widow and son in Massachusetts. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Clinton, Worcester County, Massachusetts.[17], [18], [4]
