Huey P. Newton was an African-American revolutionary and political activist, most known for co-founding the Black Panther Party with Bobby Seale.[1]
When Huey Percy Newton was born on February 17, 1942, in Monroe, Louisiana, he was the youngest of seven children born to Walter Newton and Armelia Johnson. He died on August 22, 1989, in Oakland, California, at the age of 47.[2]
Living in Louisiana at the time of his birth, his parents named him after the former Governor of Louisiana, populist Huey P. Long.[3]
He overcame illiteracy and attended Merritt College and the University of San Francisco School of Law. He continued to pursue graduate studies, eventually earning a Ph.D. in social philosophy in 1980 from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
On September 15, 1984, he married Fredricka Slaughter in Reno, Nevada.[4]
Huey P Newton had one biological child, Rico Cortez Dukes, according to Alameda Oakland California vital court records documents.
He allied for freedom, full employment, decent housing, education, and military exemption for African-Americans.
He sponsored a free breakfast program from children, sickle-cell anemia testing, free food and shoes, and a school for the impoverished.
He is credited with the creation of the Ten-Point Program,[5] the governing document of the Black Panther Party.
A published author and poet.
On 22 August, 1989 he was shot and killed in Oakland, California by Tyrone Robinson, a member of the Black Guerrilla Family, in a dispute over drug dealing. His remains were cremated, and a plaque stands at Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland.[6][7]
