Francisca Bernardina Wilhelmina Elisabetha (Elisabet) was born in 1833. She was the daughter of Jean Adam (Johann Adam) Ney and Elisabeth Wernze. [1] [2] [3] Some would have said that she was the great-niece of Maréchal Michel Ney, but not according to the records.
She met her future husband, Edmund Duncan Montgomery (philosopher, physician and scientist), while he was a student, at the University of Heidelberg in 1853. They married in 1863. [4] They had two sons, Arthur (1871–1873) and Lorne (1872–1913). In 1873, they purchased the Liendo Plantation near Hempstead in Waller County. [3]
She was a famous sculptress, producing busts and statues of famous men such as King Ludwig II of Bavaria, King George V of Hanover, Jacob Grimm, Giuseppe Garibaldi and Otto von Bismarck. [5] Many of his works can be found today in the Elisabet Ney Museum, located in his home and studio in Austin, and others works can be found at the United States Capitol, the Texas State Capitol, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. [6]
She passed away in her studio in 1907. [7]
