Biography

Flag of Cornwall (St Piran's Cross, pre-1838)
John Nicholas was born in Cornwall, England.

John, the son of Alfred Nicholas (1841-1919) and Mary Perrow (1841-1899) was born July 1872 in Land's End, Cornwall.[1]
In 1881, John (9 years) was living in Yorkshire, England with his parents and siblings Lyle (17 years), Caroline (14 years), Alfred (10 years), Eliza (3 Years) and Zaccheaus (2 years) [sic]. Alfred's father was working as an 'iron and stone' miner.[2]
The 1891 England census shows John (age 18) residing with his parents in Grosmont, Yorkshire, England along with his brother Alfred (20 years), sister Eliza (13 years), brother Zaccheaus (11 years) and a younger sister, Frances (7 years). John, his father and brother Alfred were listed as 'Ironstone Miners.' According to this census, John's older brother, Lyle (29 years), also an 'Ironstone Miner,' was living nearby with wife, Mary (28 years) and their daughter Gertrude (2 mos).[3]
John married 1) Ada Elizabeth Jane White (b. 1881) in 1899; there were no children from this union [Needs source]. He married 2) Annie Hogg (b. 1882; d. 1953) on 15 April 1902 in Loftus, Yorkshire, England [see Ref 7]. John and Annie had five children all born in Loftus, Yorkshire:

  1. Bertha Nicholas (b. 6 Oct 1902; d. Sep 1962, Hemsworth, Yorkshire), m. Emmanuel Kennerly,
  2. Sam Nicholas (b. 26 Oct 1904; d. Apr 1990, Barnsley, Yorkshire),
  3. Doris Mary Nicholas (b. 24 Sep 1907; d. Middlesborough, Yorkshire), m. Joseph F. Snowden,
  4. John Stanley Nicholas (b. 3 Aug 1909; d. Jun 1973, Barnsley, Yorkshire), m. Emily Peach,[4]and
  5. Hilda May Nicholas (b. 18 May 1916; d. 8 Nov 2009 Penarth, Wales).

The 1911 England census reports John (age 38), employed as an 'Ironstone Miner' and Annie (age 28) living in Yorkshire-North Riding with their children Bertha (8 years), Sam (6 years), Doris Mary (3 years), John Stanley (1 year) and a boarder, Edward Elwick (50 years).[5]
John served in the British Army, enlisting in 1892 at age 20 years in the Durham Light Infantry,[6] and in 1914 in the Army Reserve Machine Gun Corps.[7]
The 1939 England and Wales Register show John retired and residing with Annie in Hemsworth, Yorkshire.[8]
John died in September 1957 aged 85 years in Hemsworth, Yorkshire West Riding, England.[9]
