Biography

John Henry Nicholas was born in 1892 at Cleckheaton, Yorkshire.

John Henry Nicholas married Emily Woodward Raybould on 16 May 1914 at St. Mary's Church, Laisterdyke, Yorkshire. John was a bachelor aged 22 and a leather scourer. His father was named as John Nicholas, a quarryman. Emily was a spinster aged 19 and a tailoress. Her father was named as Howard Woodward Raybould, a chemist's warehouseman. At the time of their marriage John was living at 9 Kimberley St and Emily at 2 [sic] Greenhill Street. Their witnesses were Samuel Wood and Elizabeth Wood. ^[1]

This couple had four daughters named Phyllis Raybould Nicholas born 1914, Vera Woodward Nicholas born 1916, Muriel Nicholas born 1923 and Sheila Woodward Nicholas born 1934.

Daughter Phyllis Raybould Nicholas died in 1915 aged under 12 months. ^[2]

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time John and Emily were then living at 1008 Leeds Rd, Bradford. John, born 10 May 1892, was aged 47. He was a mason, bricklayer and grave digger. Emily, born 27 May 1894, was aged 45. Vera, born 12 October 1916, was aged 22. She was a machinist (clothing) and an Auxiliary nurse. Vera's surname was later amended to Beaumont, her married surname. Sheila, born 4 August 1934, was aged 5. Her surname was later amended to Hanson, her married surname. The record for Muriel remains closed at this time [2022]. ^[3]

John H Nicholas died in 1961 at Bradford aged 69 years. ^[4]

Emily Woodward Nicholas died in 1981 at Bradford aged about 87 years. Her date of birth was recorded as 27 May 1894. ^[5]
