William Wadwell Nicholls was born in 1896 in Stamford, Lincolnshire, England to William Wadwell Nicholls and Louisa (Dexter) Nicholls. His birth was registered in Stamford in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Dexter.[1]
In 1901 Wm W Nicholls (age 4) lived in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire with his father Wm W (30, Journeyman Baker), mother Louisa (29), sister Gertrude E (6), and brother Fred H (2).[2]
Unable to locate any further records of William's father - he may have passed away before 1910, or he may have left the family. William's mother was in a relationship with Adam Blanchard from at least 1910, but she did not officially marry him until 1921.
In 1911 William W Nicholas (age 14, Page Boy) lived in Nottingham with his mother Louisa (39) and four siblings: Gertrude E (16, Net Bruider Lace), Frederick H (12, School), Ada (9, School), and Edna B[lanchard] (1), as well as boarder Adam Blanchard (41, Commissionare / Tool Keeper Savings Bank).[3]
Serjeant William Wadwell Nicholls of the North Staffordshire Regiment, 2nd/5th Bn, passed away on 21 Mar 1918 in France, aged 21 years - he was the son of Mrs Louisa Blanchard of 101 Middle Furlong Rd, Nottingham.[4] He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial[5]
