Rebecca Nichols, daughter of Captain John and Catherine (Sabin) Nichols, was born on January 9, 1766 in Rhode Island. She and her twin brother John Nichols, were baptized Oct. 20, 1766, at the Congregational Church, Newport. Their parents were married there Dec. 23, 1750.
Her father, John Nichols, Sr., was a sea captain. He was once shipwrecked on the Hudson and was away three years: when he came home he was not recognized at once by his wife and family on account of the full beard he had grown. His vessel went down at sea and he was drowned in September of 1768. He was just 40 years old at the time. His family afterward removed to Connecticut. They were staunch Church of England people.
Rebecca married Frederick Sprague circa 1781. They would have a very large family as follows:
David Sprague (1783-1866)
Nancy Sprague (1784-1854)
Ellis Sprague (1786-1839)
Rebecca Sprague (1788-1878)
Joshua Sprague (1791-1885)
John Sprague (1793-1795)
Catherine Sprague (1795-1826)
Abigail Sprague (1797-1797)
Jacob Brown Sprague (1800-1855)
Joseph Banner Sprague (1801-1872)
Austin Edmund Sprague (1803-1830)
Sidney Smith Sprague (1806-1864)
Mary Mariah Sprague (1808-1905)
Frederick Nichols Sprague (1810-Abt. 1843)
Frederick and Rebecca would also lose 3 children at birth.
Rebecca passed away on August 27, 1850, at 84 years of age in Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois.
