Biography

Obituary

Memorial. Mr. A. C. Nichols was born October the 23rd, in Wilkes County, spending the greater part of his life on the farm devoting his time and energy to the work he so dearly loved. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having seen actual service until the surrender. He was with Lee at Gettysburg, and in the long strenuous service around Richmond, being captured by the Yankees just four days before the South gave up the struggle at Appomattox Court House.

He was always ready to sponsor anything that would echo progress and uplift his country. No doubt many will recall the interest he manifested in the bond issue for a railroad in Wilkes County. "Uncle Abe" as he was called by every one who knew him, was always interested in the late war veterans, and in fact in all veterans of any war. He took great delight in telling of the many thrilling experiences of his life as a soldier, and he was very much interested in stories of the terrible conflict between the States. As a soldier he knew the hardships of a soldier's life. The greater part of his last days were taken up in telling of the many nights he slept on the ground waking under a blanket of snow.

He was always very fond of work, and toiled unceasingly thru out his life; no task was too hard nor the labor too tiresome for him to give up the task set for him until the finishing touches were given the job. His moral and spiritual duties were not neglected, along with other work. He joined the Baptist church 25 years ago living a quiet Christian life until death.

His health failed him about four years ago, and he suffered two strokes of paralysis.

He was the last member of his family, and is survived by his wife, Evelyn, and two sons, G. A. Nichols and W. T. Nichols.
