ALSO KNOWN AS

NAME SOMETIMES SPELLED: Zepeniah, Zepaniah

From Don Norman files; Zepheniah Nichols, son of Levan and Lucretia Nichols, was born in 1763 and came to Fort Redstone Va. in 1772 with his parents. The family returned to Kent County Maryland in 1774, but soon returned to Virginia. Zepheniah joined the Va Militia late in the Revolution as a Indian scout. He applied for a pension in Lewis County Va August 20, 1834. (S-9439). His pension was dropped in May of 1836. Zepheniah married Rebecca Davis in Augusta County Va. October 30, 1790. Rebecca, a daughter of James and Rebecca (Brand) Davis, was born in 1766 and died in Gilmer County Va. on August 6,1850. The Nichols brothers and their families came to Nicholas County Va. about 1794 and present day Calhoun County WV, sometime before 1820. [NOTE: Assuming that this Zephaniah was the son of Levin Nichols of Dorchester Co., MD, he must have been born after 1767. Note

"....I will now give my recollections of the early settlers that I knew on the West Fork and Beech and Henry's Fork waters. Zephaniah Nicholas came to the West Fork from Elk river and was the father of Zephaniah, Jonathan, Robert and Andrew and Miles that left the country when a young man. Zephaniah Jr. married Nancy Marks. Jonathan married Sarah Nutter and was murdered as I have before stated in this narrative on the 8th night of April about 1842, by the Hellfired Band. Robert married Eakey Schoolcraft, and Andrew married Elizabeth, commonly called Betsy Roy. Zephaniah Sr. had a brother, Levan Nicholas, who came to the West Fork sometime about the year of 1820, and lived when I first knew him on the west side of the West Fork below Mushroom... his wife was a daughter of old Isaac Mace and the sister of Henry Mace. Her name was Margaret and her nickname was Peggy." --from "Recollections of A Lifetime" by Daniel Dewees (1904), page 19
Eric D. King Notes:
Two sources state that Zephaniah and Levan Nicholas were indian spies for the Virginia militia.

Nichols-1116 and Nichols-2306 appear to represent the same person because: Time to merge these, I believe. Please read Biography and Note on profile of Nichols-2306: Zephaniah (I suggest using standard spelling of Biblical name, as the other data clearly indicate spelling variants) himself attested to his Maryland birth in his Rev. War pension application.

Nichols-2306 and Nichols-1116 are not ready to be merged because: Need a little more info/research to make the necessary corrections.
Nichols-1116 and Nichols-2306 appear to represent the same person because: These two are the same person; both spellings of the name are recorded in various documents. It is not known when Zephaniah's father Levin/Levan married the wife recorded in later records as "Lucretia", but in 1767 Levin's wife was Rebecca, because she cosigned when the two sold land that Levin had inherited from his father, John Nichols, Jr. It is likely, then, that this Rebecca was actually Zephaniah's mother, and Lucretia came later.
