When Joseph R. Nichols was born on January 19, 1798, in Virginia, his father, John Nichols (1853-1928), was 44 and his mother, Anna Mason (1853-1928), was 45. He married Indiana Badger in 1819 in Linn, Iowa. They had 11 children in 29 years. He died on November 18, 1898, in Bonanza, Oregon, at the impressive age of 100, and was buried there.

Orson Lewis was the son-in-law. He was married to Elizabeth (Lizzy or Betty) Nichols. I have her DOB as 1831. They were married 3/1/1848 in Linn County, Iowa. Orson's DOB was about 1827 in Pennsylvania. Orson's father was Nathan Lewis born in CT in 1798, and his mother was Frances born in KY in 1797. Orson is brother to Anna Lewis who married John Nichols. Orson and Anna have two other sisters named Charlot and Minerva.
