Biography

Effie Nichols was born in about July 1869 in Wales, Erie, New York to Eli Nichols and Mary Church. ^[1] They moved to Aurora, Erie, New York by 1875. Eli Nichols was employed as a farm laborer. ^[2]

In 1880, the Nichols family were residents of Holland, Erie, New York. Effie was one of seven children. ^[3] Effie also appears in the home of her grandparents, Alvin and Maria Church. ^[4]

Effie married (first name unknown) Mayo in about 1885, and they had one child, Charles Mayo, born in 1886 in Springville, Cattaraugus, New York. Effie and Charles lived with the Nichols family in Machias, Cattaraugus, New York in 1892. ^[5]

In 1892 or 1893, Effie., age 25, married widower, George Peter Snyder, about 20 years her senior and the parent of seven children. In 1900, Effie and George resided in Sardinia, Erie, New York with Charles (shown as Charles Snyder) and their 3-year-old daughter, Ivah. ^[6]

In 1905, Effie, George and their two children, Ivah and Henry, and Effie's son, Charlie, were residents of Lyndon, Cattaraugus, New York. George was a farmer and Charlie was a farm laborer. ^[7]

In 1910, George and Effie had been married for 18 years, and Effie reported having three children, all of whom were living. George and Effie lived in Sardinia with daughter, Ivah V. (age 13); son, Henry J. (age 6); and stepson, Charlie A. Mayo (age 21) (erroneously shown as a son-in-law) in Sardinia, Erie, New York. (Note: Charles and Ivah are also shown in the 1910 Census in Concord, Erie, New York in the home Byron Snyder, one of George's children from his first marriage.) ^[8]

George Snyder died in 1913.

In 1920, Effie, age 53 and a widow, lived in Salamanca, Cattaraugus, New York, with her son, Henry, age 18, who was a woodworker in a furniture factory. ^[9]

In 1926, Henry married Zelma Butterfield. In 1930, they and Effie lived in one household in Humphrey, Cattaraugus, New York. Henry was employed as a farm laborer. ^[10]

Effie, age 78, and Henry, age 37 and now single, lived together in Salamanca, in 1940. Henry was a laborer. ^[11]

Effie died on April 12, 1941 in Salamanca, Cattaraugus, New York and was buried in Wildwood Cemetery in Salamanca. ^{[12] [13]}
