Given that Joshua and Janet Fraizer Hankins Nichols (parents) purchased property in Anson Co., N.C. in 1753 in an area that became Rowan County later in the year, Joseph Nichols was born in Rowan County about 1760. Having served in the American Revolution and marrying in 1784 also places his date of birth near 1760.
An Application for a Pension, based on Joseph Nichols' service in the Revolutionary War, was filed in 1850 by three of the surviving children of Joseph NIchols: "Uppamia" Tomlinson, Phebe Hooton and Abigail Nichols. Elizabeth Davis was another surviving child.). The application stated that Joseph served in at least two campaigns (one of nine months and the other of ten months) during the American Revolution in a cavalry company. He served under General Rutherford and Colonel Hampton. An affidavit by Daniel Nichols was filed with the application, swearing that he resided with Joseph Nichols and knew that Joseph was a soldier in Col. Waid Hampton's Regiment of Horsemen for ten months near the close of the War. The application for a pension was rejected,[1] as they could not document 1 (one) year of service.
The service of Joseph Nichols was proven by descendant Nell Reeves who entered the DAR under his service record. DAR# A083529.
