Biography

Lydia was born in 1842 to parents Hiram Nichols and Elizabeth Bynum. Lydia is first shown as eight years old living with her parents and siblings in the 1850 census in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. [1]

In 1860 Lydia is 17 years old living in the household of her parents in Newton County, Mississippi.[2]

About 1864 Benjamin Henderson and Lydia Virginia Nichols were married. (No marriage record found as Smith County had a record loss.). Lydia was the daughter of Hiram Nichols. Ben and Lydia are first shown on the 1870 census along with their first three children. [3]

Ten years later, in 1880, Ben and Liddie are still residing in Smith County, now with six children in their household. Ben is a farmer, says he was born in Mississippi; also, is recorded that both his parents were born in Mississippi which is not correct as it is known that his father was born in South Carolina. [4]

In 1900 Ben's birth date is given as November 1843 (which is one year late) and Lydia's is given as January 1843. Lydia is listed as having had nine children with seven still living. [5]

The 1910 census shows Ben and Lydia as 66 and 67 years old living in Smith County. Lydia has given birth to 9 children and 7 are living. Also, living with them is their son Jesse, 26 years old, and his wife Fannie. They have been married five years; Fannie has given birth to three children and two are living. There are two young children ages three and nine months old. They are listed as a nephew and niece of the head of house. This appears to be an error on the part of the census taker as these two young children are apparently the children of Jesse and Fannie and so would be Ben's grandchildren. [6]

Ben and Lydia are listed as 76 and 77 years old in the 1920 census. They have no children or grandchildren living with them. This is the last census where Benjamin and Lydia appear as Lydia died in 1924 and Ben died in 1926. [7]

Lydia died in 1924.[8]

For your DNA confirmation statement: Because the two matching test takers are more distantly related than third cousin, you will need to use triangulation. See this part of the DNA confirmation instructions:

I've changed the 'confirmed with DNA' entry to 'confident'. Please add the correct documentation before changing it back to 'confirmed with DNA'. Thanks!
