Biography

Samuel Nicholson was born on 26 September 1826 in Buncombe County, North Carolina. His parents, Walter and Dorcas (Hogsed) Nicholson were enumerated in Buncombe County in the 1830 U.S. Census. In that census, Samuel and his brother Logan were shown as the two males under age five.[1]

Sometime afterwards, Samuel's parents moved their family to Georgia, probably going first to Hall County, where Samuel's paternal grandparents and several uncles and aunts were enumerated in the 1830 census. On 13 September 1832, Samuel's older sister, Elizabeth, married in Elam H. Davis in Hall County. [2]By 1840, Samuel's father had established the family in Union County, Georgia. [3]

On 27 January 1848, Samuel married Sarah Hooper in Union County. [4][5][6]Samuel and Sarah were enumerated in the 1850 U.S. census for Union County, Georgia with a two year old son John, who was likely named after his paternal grandfather. Living next door was Samuel's parents, Walter and Dorcus (Hogsed) Nicholson and on the other side, Enos and Mathilda Hooper. Two houses away on either side were Samuel's sisters Elizabeth Davis and Easter Patterson and their families. Three to six households away were Samuel's brother Logan and his in-laws in houses headed by his father in law, Absalom Hooper. and Francis Hooper. [7]

In 1855, Samuel, his father and his brother, Logan Nicholson, were all listed on the 1855 tax list for 833 District, Union County, Georgia. Samuel was shown with 1 poll, 50 acres of land valued at $150 and a total assessable estate of $435. [8] On 6 March 1856, Towns County Georgia was created from a western portion of Rabun County and an eastern portion of Union County.[9] The property of Samuel Nicholson and his father fell into the boundaries of the new county.

Samuel Nicholson was enumerated in Towns County, Georgia on August 3, 1860 for the United States Census, 1860. He was noted as born 1827 in North Carolina and a farmer that had $600 in value of real estate and $400 in value of personal estate as seen in the image of the original census. Also included in the household are female Sarah Nicholson, male John Nicholson, male Andrew Nicholson, female Martha Nicholson and male Caroline (Cacolimbus?) Nicholson.[10]

Samuel Nicholson was enumerated at Hiwassee Post Office, Towns County, Georgia for the August 2, United States Census, 1870. He was noted as born 1826-1827 in North Carolina. He was noted as a farmer that had $450 in value of real estate and $800 in value of personal assets. He is marked as not being able to write as seen in this image of the original census. Also included in the household are female Sarah Nicholson, male John Nicholson, male Absolem Nicholson, female Martha Nicholson, female Camullery Nicholson, female Dorkus Nicholson and male Ruce Burk.[11]

Samuel Nicholson was enumerated as self at Lower Hiwassee, District 833, Towns County, Georgia for the June 10, United States Census, 1880. He was noted as a farmer, born 1827 in North Carolina and married as seen in this image of the original census. Also included in the household are wife Sarah Nicholson, mother Darcas Nicholson and daughter Jane Nicholson.[12]

Samuel Nicholson was listed as the father of John Thomas Nicholson who died June 30, 1933 in Towns County, Georgia. The mother was listed as Sarah Hooper.[13]

Pvt. Samuel Nicholson is buried with his wife Sarah (Hooper) in Enotah Baptist Church Cemetery in Towns County, Georgia.[14]
