Biography
William Nicholson was born at Ballymagee, County Down, Ireland. [1][2]
He was born in 1591. [2] (Note: The date is given as 1587[3] in Burke 1836, but this is corrected in later editions.)
His father was born in Cumberland, England. [1][2]
William resided at Ballow, County Down, founding a lineage of Nicholsons there. [1][2]
He married Janet Brown. [1][2]
- John Nicholson. Died 1655. [1][2]
- Hugh Nicolson. Younger son. [1][2]
- (Note: Burke 1836 gives William Nicholson as a third child[3], but he is a grandson.)
William died 5 April 1665. [1][2][3]
Research Notes
Palmer claims that William Nicholson built Ballow House in 1604[4]. However, William would have have been aged only 13 at the time, so it is more likely that his father built it.
