Andrew Nicol was born in Masterton, in October 1899, to Andrew Nicol and Janet (Urie) Nicol. In 1915, after leaving school, he was working for his father, who was the proprietor of the Martinborough Star at the time. He was a farmer in 1922, in the Waiotahi Valley, near Opotiki, Bay of Plenty, with his brother Urie, and sisters Cathy and Jessie. Andrews parents joined him at the farm by 1928. Andrew married Beatrice (Francis) at Wanganui, New Zealand, in July 1928, and they returned by horseback to Waiotahi. By August 1932, Andrew and Beatrice had shifted to a dairy farm in Eastern Boundary Road, at nearby Whakatane, where they farmed until January 1937. From there they returned back to Opotiki, to a dairy farm in Apanui Road, where they stayed for the remainder of their lives.
