Isabel was born on the 22 December 1849 and baptised on 7 February 1850. The record notes that her parents are "Walter Nicol, Farm Servant, and Catherine Stewart, both unmarried"
When she married William her occupation is given as Flax Mill Worker. Her father had become a Farm Overseer and her mother had died.
At some point after the birth of their daughter Naomi Isabel and William went to East London in South Africa where William worked, until 1890, for his cousin James Geddie, who was in charge of building ships' lighters at the Barbour there.
They left behind all Isabel's children and the surviving son John from Williams' first marriage, who were all brought out to East London by Jane Ann Geddie Geddie-84 in August 1890, about 18 months after Isabel died, age 44, from dysentery. Her death record gives her name as Isabella (Nicol) Geddie, not Isabel. It was not signed b William, but by John Geddie. This may have been her brother-in-law John, a ships carpenter, if he too had come to East London, or her step-son John. It is not known where William might have been at the time of Isabel's death.
