Sir William Nicolay was born in 1771.
In 1806 William married Mary Law. He was a recipient of the Waterloo Medal.
Nicolay was commissioned into the 11th Regiment of Foot in 1788. He saw action in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, including the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. After the war, he served as Governor of Dominica from 1824 to 1831, Governor of Saint Kitts and Nevis from 1831 to 1832, and Governor of Mauritius from 1832 to 1840. He was promoted to Lieutenant General in 1837.
Nicolay was a controversial figure during his lifetime. He was criticized for his handling of the abolition of slavery in Mauritius, and he was accused of corruption. However, he was also praised for his military service and his governorship of Mauritius.
