James was born 1814 in Caithness. He was the eldest son of Thomas and Ann Nicolson who had been married the previous year in Bower, Caithness
On 2 July 1847 he married Christina Stewart in Thurso[1].
In 1851[2] James and Christina were living at Thurso East Farm Steading with their two sons. James was the farm manager.
In 1871, [3] James and Christina were living at Bainstown[4] in Thurso Parish. The ruined croft is still there[5] and James farmed 50 acres. The owner of this property, Sir J. J. Sinclair, was also the owner of Thurso East, where James had been the farm manager. Living with them were five sons and their daughter.
In 1881 [6] James and Christina were living in Harpsdale in Halkirk parish and farming 60 acres of which 40 were arable. With them were their daughter, two sons and a granddaughter, Christina. Many of his eight sons had already emigrated to the USA.
He passed away on 1 November 1890[7], aged 76, and was buried in Halkirk churchyard.
