Biography

Birth: Nellie Viola Niess was born on 15 August 1891, the first child of Edwin Alonzo and Carrie Virginia Carvell Niess. At the time of her birth the couple lived at 822 I St., N.E., Washington, D.C.
Death: After living (or not really living) with Memory Loss for at least 15 years, my grandmother died on 30 Apr 1976 in Riverside, California. I remember my father calling me with the news and I traveled from my home in Huntington Beach, California to be with my parents for the weekend. She had a very long death and we were glad for her sake that it was over. A very talented and loving lady had no memory of the full life she had led.
Burial: Nellie's ashes were returned to the East Coast to be buried with her mother in Springhill Cemetery, Shippensburg, Cumberland, Pennsylvania. Both of Mother and Daughter are buried behind Jeremiah Mark Carvell's remains, father of Carrie V. Carvell Niess, and grandfather of Nellie V. Niess Sherman.

The pastor of the church, the Rev. Jay T. Stocking, officiated. The bride was given in marriage by her father, and wore a gown of ivory brocaded crepe de chine made with a court train. Her veil, which was of tulle, fell from a cap of lace and orange blossoms to the edge of the train, and she carried a shower bouquet of lilies of the valley, orchids, and bride roses. Mrs. Jarvis Goodwin was matron of honor, and her gown was of pale pink satin and lace. She wore a cap of pink tulle and carried a basket of pink roses.
There were four bridesmaids, each of whom wore a gown of crepe de chine in the pastel shade to form the colors of the rainbow.
