Clifford was born in 1881, the 3rd of 8 children born to Alexander Nipper and Rebecca Ann Pitts. His 7 siblings were: Cleo Viola, Jack, Colitha Lenolia, Amanda Pearl, Penny Larotha, Ellihew Lawton, and Maggie; and 2 half-siblings were: Sarah Elizabeth Hutto and Willis Jackson (Hutto) Nipper.
